C39 Lab Rules
Basic rules and how-to's for using the Life Sciences C39 (SIOS) fab-lab
Thou Shalt
I. Clean up after yourself, if something is left out to dry, leave a note with your name. Put tools away after you use them
II. Dipose of sharps (any glass, pipette tips, fibres, coverslips) in sharps bins. When full, close securely, label side as ‘C39’ and leave outside B8 and let Kerry know we need a new sharps bin.
III. Well before bio-bin (yellow) overflows dipose of it. Twist together top opening and tape securely to side of the bag. Label side as ‘C39’ and leave outside B8, replace bin-liner from the yellow roll in C39.
IV. Refill nearly empty solvent squeeze bottles. Refill from glass bottles stored in the solvent locker (below right fumehood). Do this inside a fumehood + wear PPE (coat, gloves, goggles)
V. Empty glass solvent bottle protocol. If a glass solvent bottle runs out, label it “Spent” and leave it with lid off to dry in the back of a fumehood. Once fully dried leave under sink for solvent waste disposal or dispose as a sharp in the autoclave room LS B82.
VI. Solvent waste bin disposal protocol. When red solvent waste bin is full decant it into a large glass beaker (inside fumehood), and decant that into an empty “Spent”. Wear full PPE, recommended to have another person assist. Alert Kerry that we need solvent waste disposal + place appropriate label on bottle + fill in form (ask Kerry for these). Store filled “Spent” bottle in the solvent locker until collection
VII. Replace nearly spent consumables (e.g. gloves, pipette tips, petri dishes). Look for replacements in the black trunk or alert Kerry if there are no more replacements.
VIII. Replace the Ar/N tanks when the left gauge reads less than 20 bar (if you dont know how, ask Kerry, Sal, Rafael, etc).
IX. Leave the sputterer and microscope areas clean after use (cover the microscope after use)
X. Wash glassware after use (and drying) with wash-up liquid in the sink and leave to dry on the drying rack.
